The atmosphere is pretty easy going on MSC Opera and the dress code is mostly casual. But you might want to pack your tux or a jacket and tie for the odd Gala evening or Captain’s Cocktail Party where the drinks keep flowing.

Helsinki, like so many Baltic cruise destinations, is easy to discover on foot. In the summer months when most cruise ships call, you can stroll Market Square and Esplanade Park listening to concerts, picking up Scandinavian design and just enjoying the atmosphere. And, in case you were in any doubt that the Scandinavians have a certain way with architecture, the Temppeliaukio Church is remarkable and decidedly lovely with its solid rock walls and fabulous copper roof.     

Copenhagen is simply one of the finest Baltic cites. The Little Mermaid and the Tivoli Gardens may be 'touristy' but, leaving aside the price of a beer in the Tivoli Gardens, it's touristy in a good way! If you're not frightened to splash out on real quality, shopping in Copenhagen is a wonderful treat for lovers of design.

St Petersburg must have the most exciting modern history of any city in the world. In many ways despite the odd Soviet 'masterpiece' it's also a city that has been spared the vagaries of modern development. Even the horrific Siege of Leningrad failed to ruin the lovely 18^th century buildings and boulevards.

Places You Might See On A Norwegian Fjords Cruise

Geiranger Fjord in many ways epitomises all the good things about a cruise to the Norwegian Fjords. This spectacular 100km (that's 62 miles in old money) long stretch of water passes through spectacular glacial scenery to reach a small and wonderfully quaint little town. On your way to the town of Geiranger you'll pass famous landmarks like the Seven Sisters waterfall (assuming there's been some rain and snow on the high mountains) and mighty Mount Dalsnibba where a trip to the summit - often snow covered even in summer - offers truly magnificent views.

Further north, a visit to Tromso is your gateway to the land of the Midnight Sun and one of the best locations on Earth to catch the extraordinary natural light show that is The Northern Lights.   

Bergen is a favourite port of call amongst cruisers from all over Europe and, indeed, the world. If you want to experience an authentic slice of Norwegian life, head for the busy fish market for a seafood lunch.
